経済学大学院留学ガイド -Statement of Purpose-

Statement of Purpose(以下、SOPと略す) とは、願書の一項目で、大学院出願の目的などを書いた文章のこと。巷の留学ガイドでは「エッセイ」と訳されていることが多い。
経済学大学院出願においては、SOP はあまり重要視されない。せいぜい、出願者の研究関心や大学院に行く事がどういうことか理解して出願しているのかどうかを確認する程度に使われる(SA)。とはいえ、全く読まれないわけではないので、書くからには最善を尽くそう。(2005年3月追記：NYUは重視するようだ。)
研究関心、これまでにやってきた勉強内容、なぜこの大学を選んだか、博士号取得後の将来計画、といったこと。
トップ20の大学院に入るには、将来計画に国際機関や民間で働きたいと書いてはいけない(PR, a PhD holder from Stanford)。トップスクールの評判は、トップランクの大学に博士号取得者が何人就職したかで決まるから、国際機関や民間で働こうとする学生は大学として必要ないのである。
また、他の出願書類(transcripts etc.)を見るだけでははっきりしないことを補足するのに利用することもできる。例えば、履修した授業の具体的な内容だとか、出願先の大学の教授にコンタクトを取った事とか。
選考にプラスになりそうなことは全て書き込むべき。遠慮という日本人の美徳は通用しない。また、書いた内容の信頼性を高めるために、推薦状でも同じことを書いてもらうように頼んだりするのも手だろう。もちろん、事実の範囲内で。

大学によってまちまちで、500語のところもあれば1000語のところもあれば制限のないところもある。日本の大学受験などの経験から字数オーバーはマイナスだと捉えがちだが、そんなに気にしなくていい。ただ、あまりに長すぎると読んでもらえなくなるだろう。なので、約1500語が上限だろう。
出願締切に間に合うように書けばいいのだが、推薦状を依頼するときに SOP も渡しておくと推薦者も推薦状を書きやすくなるので、推薦状を依頼する時期までに書き上げておくのが理想。留学奨学金に出願する場合(こちらを参照)は、その度に研究計画を書く必要があり、それを元に SOP を書く事になるから、実質、夏ごろから書き始めることになる。また、留学事情に詳しい人に内容を見てもらったり、ネイティブチェック(ネイティブスピーカーによる文法チェック)をしてもらうのであれば、当然、早めに書き始める必要がある（修正する時間が必要だから)。なお、ネイティブチェックは案外手間暇のかかる作業らしく、無料でしてくれる人を探すのは結構大変。お金を払って翻訳会社に依頼するのも手である（私はそこまでする必要は無いと思い、結局ネイティブチェックをしなかった)。
合格した BU に提出した SOP を以下に載せておく。願書に書いてあった instruction は以下の通り。
Write a statement on a separate page of not fewer than 200 words describing your qualifications and the objectives of your educational program. Report any research activities, publications, independent studies, and memberships in academic, professional, or honorary societies. Account for time that has elapsed between formal studies. Applicants for teaching fellowships should indicate previous teaching experience. If any physical or emotional factors will affect your program of study, please include an explanation in your statement. Please be sure to write your name on this sheet. Please be advised that under certain circumstances, this evaluation may be reviewed by someone other than a member of the admissions committee of the department indicated above.
''Write a statement on a separate page'' とあったので、馬鹿正直に1ページに収まるように書いた。出願書類を送ってから、もっとたくさん書けばよかった、と後悔したけれど、もっとたくさん書いた他の大学には不合格で、BU には合格した。SOP の重要性なんてその程度のようだ。教育経験を書いたのは BU だけで、他の大学への SOP には書かなかった。Instruction に研究関心について書けとは書いてなかったけど、さすがにそれはまずいだろうと思って、最後に付け加えた。

My Qualifications
After finishing undergraduate study, I entered the Graduate School of Economics at University of Tokyo to acquire basic tools of economic analysis. I took the core curriculum of graduate-level economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics). Although I did not take quantitative skill classes during undergraduate study, I had opportunities to learn mathematics and statistics during these course works, and I obtained grade A's in all the core courses. Therefore, I have no difficulty in studying economics in terms of quantitative skills. Also, I have been writing my master's thesis (see my writing sample) under supervision by Noriyuki Yanagawa (one of my recommenders) during this year. This experience has provided me with opportunities to understand what writing papers in economics is like, and it will be helpful when I write my PhD thesis.
Objectives of My Educational Program
My objective of the PhD program in economics is acquiring the expertise to research the issues of development from the viewpoint of economics. After the completion of my Ph.D. thesis, I want to continue research on economic development by being a professor at university and publishing academic papers on refereed journals. While making academic contributions to the field of development economics, I also want to work as an academic advisor for international development financial institutions or the governments of developing countries. In addition, I want to teach economics especially to those who are interested in development but have difficulty learning economics.
Previous Teaching Experience
From April to September in 2001, I worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate microeconomics class at University of Tokyo. My job was grading and making answer sheets of problem sets and the final exam.
Research Interests
My area of specialization is economic development. Especially, I have two research interests: the causes and consequences of state capture and formal enforcement of contracts. State capture means bribe payment by firms to legislators. It is a form of corruption, but different from bureaucratic corruption. In the literature, there are quite a few studies on bureaucratic corruption while there are few on state capture. I want to fill this void of literature. Formal enforcement of contracts is crucial for economic development because enforcement by a business network excludes contract opportunities outside the network even when they are more profitable than inside the network. From the viewpoint of economics, I want to find out how to develop legal institutions that promote transactions between firms unacquainted with each other.
